AMAZON PRIME DAY, 2017

Tuesday, July 11, 2017 marks Amazon Prime Day this year.

It’s like a summer Black Friday exclusive for Amazon Prime customers.

Check out the deals at Amazon.

It kind of snuck up on me this year. Is July 11 really here so soon? Wait: It’s already July? Didn’t the year just start? I guess that means I’ve been busy writing, which is a good thing.

There has been a banner on Amazon’s home page for a few days mentioning it, but Amazon really didn’t tap into the indie potential. I didn’t see mention of it in the KDP newsletter. Maybe the reason is that Amazon’s emphasis is on other products, but it seems that if they encouraged indie authors to schedule a Countdown Deal on Prime Day, or if they would discount more CreateSpace paperbacks on this day and let authors know about it (rather, CreateSpace paperbacks are more likely to be discounted on other days, it seems), well… surely those authors would really help to spread the word about Prime Day and be excited about it. Imagine the millions of authors who would like to feel “included” in the deal, even if they are small names, and would be excited to let their fans (even if in small numbers) know that they were somehow involved, if only they were directly involved and encouraged to participate. Multiply their fan bases by the huge number of indie authors (many of whom have actually developed great marketing skills), and it could be helpful advertising for Amazon.

I do love Amazon, and Amazon has been great for me as an author (and customer). I’m just thinking that if Amazon could see the potential here, they could make Prime Day even better.

BUT YOU CAN STILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF PRIME DAY—EVEN IF YOU MISSED IT

So maybe you’re an author and you weren’t prepared for Amazon Prime Day.

Maybe you weren’t given a heads up. Maybe you didn’t put any of your books on sale.

Or maybe you did have a sale on Prime Day and it was a DUD, considering all the other great deals going on.

If so, it’s not too late to use Amazon Prime Day to YOUR advantage.

Put one of your books on sale AFTER Amazon Prime Day. That’s right: after.

Probably a Kindle e-book that isn’t already at its minimum possible price. That’s the easiest way for an indie author to put a book on sale.

When your sale starts, use your marketing to promote it something like this: “Missed Amazon Prime Day? Don’t worry, you can still catch a great deal.”

(You could do this after Black Friday, Cyber Monday, etc.)

Now your book is on sale, but not at the same time as the majority of other items, and not when customers are too busy on other deals to look for indie books.

Sales aren’t easy to come by, even with discounts. Marketing isn’t easy, even when you have a good idea.

But there is an opportunity here. It can be pulled off if done right.

Much of marketing is learned through experience. Come up with ideas, try to find out which of them suit you.

AMAZON PRIME DAY

Tuesday, July 12, 2016 is a special sale for Amazon Prime members. It’s Amazon Prime Day.

Last year, when Amazon Prime Day made its debut, Amazon’s sales exceeded their previous Black Friday record.

It is a huge day for Amazon. It’s a huge sale for Amazon Prime members.

And many customers will be signing up for Amazon Prime memberships or trials to take advantage.

I remember waking up early in the morning last year to discover that the items I most wanted had already sold out. The most popular Kindle devices sell out fast. But there were deals going on throughout the day. When a great deal starts, you need to act fast. You can sign up for notifications, which may help.

Prime Day isn’t just about books. In fact, if you browse the offers, you’ll see all sorts of sales in other departments, and books don’t jump out at you.

However, most customers think of books when they think of Amazon. So what’s apt to happen when millions of people buy other products at Amazon is that they’ll shop for books, too, even if books didn’t bring them there in the first place.

Department stores made Black Friday famous. Amazon has done the same thing, but even better.

Whereas thousands of stores compete for Black Friday traffic, Amazon created a special day in the middle of July, when sales aren’t normally so hot, and Amazon did this in such a way that no other stores are competing for Amazon’s traffic. It’s ingenious.

On top of that, Amazon is using the day to sell all kinds of products. So this is a big boost to Amazon’s usual business, and gets some customers in the habit of thinking of Amazon when they’re shopping for other things besides media products.

For authors, hopefully this boost in sales will trickle down to books, if not on Prime Day itself, hopefully sometime after. As more customers get into the habit of shopping with Amazon Prime, that will hopefully lead to more books being read.

Is Amazon Prime Day better than Black Friday?

PRIME DAY, JULY 15, 2015

July 15, 2015 is Amazon Prime Day.

It’s a special one-day sale event like Black Friday, but just for Amazon Prime customers.

It was advertised to have more deals than Black Friday. But is it better than Black Friday?

Visit the Prime Deals page. Just go to the home page, and if July 15, 2015 hasn’t passed yet (Pacific time, I suppose), you should see the offers.

If you’re a Prime customer, you can take advantage of them.

  • It’s a great day to subscribe to Kindle Unlimited. You can buy subscriptions up to 40% off up to 2 years in advance, if you’re an Amazon Prime member. (Click on the Lightning Deals banner from the Prime Deals page, look to the left and scroll down.)
  • Some Kindle readers are still available, as of now. The one I wanted was gone, but there are others at good savings. One of them is just on sale; not all are Lightning Deals.
  • Prime Exclusive Lightning Deals are limited-time offers with limited quantities available. You can find a list of these from the Prime Deals page.
  • A separate list shows upcoming Prime Exclusive Lightning Deals so you can be ready when they start.
  • There is also a list of Prime Exclusive Sales and Savings. These aren’t Lightning Deals. Most appear to expire at 2:00 a.m. (probably Pacific time).
  • Amazon music has deals going on.
  • Clothing and jewelry has Prime Exclusive Offers.
  • There is an offer to save money on Amazon gift cards, which always come in handy.
  • There are more deals than just these.

I wound up buying several print books.

I didn’t see books listed on the Prime Deals page.

And most of my print books weren’t on sale; at least, not most of my bestsellers. A few of my print books were on sale today, though not as many as usual.

But I was browsing for advanced math books, and a few of the Dover editions caught my eye. A couple were on sale for $3.99 with list prices over $20. Dover editions tend to be less expensive math books. I’m not sure how $3.99 compares to the usual Amazon price, but it looked pretty good to me. I bought a whole library of advanced math books today (not all were as cheap at $3.99).

While e-books may not have been featured on Prime Day, there is good news for authors:

  • Many Prime customers purchased Kindle Unlimited subscriptions of up to 24 months, saving 25% to 40%. They will be reading a lot of books in the coming months. This helps KDP Select authors.
  • Many Prime customers purchased Kindle readers today. They will need to find e-books to read in the coming months. This helps all e-book authors.

There were a lot of deals today, most of them Lightning Deals. Was it as good as Black Friday? Maybe it depends on what you were shopping for. Maybe it depends on whether you missed out on a Lightning Deal that you really wanted.

AMAZON TURNED MY FROWN UPSIDE DOWN

I admit, I was a bit frustrated at first.

This morning, I checked the Prime Deals.

I wanted to buy another Kindle reader, and the one I wanted seemed to be on sale at a very good price.

But it turned out to be a Lightning Deal.

(Note: There is at least one Kindle reader on sale that’s not a Lightning Deal, and at least one other Kindle reader with a Lightning Deal that had only been 14% claimed last I checked. It’s just the one I had my eye on that had already expired.)

And I had already missed out.

This didn’t make much sense to me:

  • The more Kindle readers Amazon sells, the more Kindle e-books Amazon will sell, right?
  • So why limit the number of Kindle readers for sale?
  • Why not have any kind of sale on the Kindle reader after the Lightning Deal ends?
  • This morning, thousands of customers had already missed out on this Lightning Deal for a new Kindle.
  • Then the price shot up to regular price.
  • So thousands of people started their Prime Day with the “Sorry, you missed it!” feeling.
  • It would have been better to have a sale price, with lesser savings, follow the Lightning Deal, so you could at least get some savings on the Kindle reader, and not completely miss it.

I waited 15 minutes to chat with an agent, who informed me that many other Prime customers had made a similar inquiry on the missed Lightning Deal.

Just think of all the Prime customers who were frustrated over this who didn’t contact Amazon.

However, the 15 minutes turned out to be worth it. They couldn’t honor the Lightning Deal, but they did make an offer that changed my frown into a smile.

I didn’t wind up buying another Kindle today, but I did buy several other items.

Amazon does provide good customer service. I’m glad I contacted support.

I could have been frustrated over the Kindle reader and purchased nothing at all on Prime Day, but they made me happy and I wound up buying a small library’s worth of math books instead.
