I was asked to write a post about writing a book blurb.  At least I think I was since it’s sitting on my topic list with a blogger’s name next to it.  To be fair, I have part of a shopping list on this thing too.  Still need to pick up those eggs.

Now I’ve written several book blurbs and synopsis and one or two of them could even be called good.  The thing is that I truly hate writing these things because they leave me drained and stressed.  Why?  Because there is so much I want to say and I never know what’s the important stuff and what hooks should be used.  Keep this in mind as I tread into the list.  As I said in the title, I don’t always know what I’m doing.  In fact, I had to rewrite all of mine…

Call to Arms – Book Marketing Results

Following my Call to Arms, a number of you responded by sharing with me your book marketing experience. I now have about a hundred responses by some fifty authors. Although some of the responses were expected, there were quite a few surprises in there for me.

Methodology

For anyone wishing to take a look at the raw data, you can download this Excel spreadsheet. I grouped the results according to whether the book was offered full-price, discounted or free. I also have a fourth category titled Other, that includes any entries where this was not specified.

To compare the various ad media, I came up with a number that represents the ratio between number of sales and cost of advertising. In other word, if you spent $1 and had one sale, then this number would be one. If you spent $1 and had two sales, the number would be two, etc.

An easy way to sell more books

Effrosyni Moschoudi was the very first one to suggest to me this little trick, and I have since used it with all my books. Now, Jonathan Gunson has written a great post with the same easy way to sell more books, as a comment on a presentation by Goodreads CEO Otis Chandler.

In a survey of Goodreads’ 15 million strong membership, he found that the main driver of eBook purchases was, unsurprisingly, ‘referral by a friend’.  But when a follow-up question was put to readers, another powerful sales strategy for authors emerged.

They were asked:  “What do you want to do when you get to the end of a book?”

The telling response was that 83%wanted tosee what else the author had written.

KINDLE SCOUT

Amazon recently launched a new program called Kindle Scout.

It’s a new publishing program that involves reader input. (Currently available in the US.)

It’s a form of publishing, not self-publishing, but unlike traditional publishing:

  • $1500 advance and 50% royalties
  • Reader voting impacts consideration
  • Looking for new, copy-edited manuscripts
  • It helps to have a good cover

There is a reward for readers to get involved, too:

  • Free book. If you vote on a book that gets selected for publishing, you receive an early copy free.
  • You can vote on up to three books at a time.
  • Read a short sample to judge which books to vote for.

Note that voting doesn’t quite determine which books get published. Voting determines which books get considered.

Authors need the votes. You’re basically showing that you have some basic marketing skills to put a following together. But the votes only…
